Their Sons
"...As for my little boys, they will grow as I have done, and never know a father's love and care. Little Willie is too young to remember me long, and my blue-eyed Edgar will keep my frolics with him among the dimmest memories of his childhood...."

The Ballous had two sons. Edgar, the eldest, was born ten months after his parents' wedding. William was their New Year's baby, born January 4, 1859. Both boys were educated and grew to "honorable manhood" as Sullivan hoped. He would have been proud of them. They married two sisters and eventually moved out of New England.

An anonymous CDV. There is no known image of Willie or Edgar Ballou.

This is a photograph of a typical little Civil War era boy. The Ballous had their sons' photographs taken at this age, but no photos survive, so we don't know exactly what Edgar and William looked like.

For Love and Liberty contains a wealth of information about Sarah's "scholars," their wives, children and step children. Find out if Sullivan and Sarah have direct descendants in America today.
